Reese Witherspoon and her husband have announced a divorce just two days before their 12th wedding anniversary.
She shared their last family picture on January 1, 2023.
A source has revealed possible reasons for the divorce, which began 18 months before the actress shared the statement.
Reese Witherspoon and Jim Toth have mutually decided to end their marriage after eleven years. Following news of their divorce, an insider said the pair are “best of friends.”
The source further stated that Witherspoon and Toth’s decision to dissolve their union was solely amiable as they are both involved parents to their child.
The pair are family-orientated and intend to make the divorce process less painful for everyone involved. Toth and Witherspoon announced their divorce on March 24, 2023, via an Instagram post writing:
“We have some personal news to share. It is with a great deal of care and consideration that we have made the difficult decision to divorce. We have enjoyed so many wonderful years together and are moving forward with deep love, kindness,, and mutual respect for everything we have created together.”
Their focus now is their son Tennessee and Witherspoon’s two older kids, daughter Ava and son Deacon – whom she shares with her former spouse, actor Ryan Phillippe.
The mother of three and Toth first announced their engagement in December 2010 and later walked down the aisle on March 26, 2011.
The now-estranged couple’s last family social upload was on January 1, 2023. Witherspoon shared a picture of her and Toth with their son posing at the beach during sunset while facing away from the camera.
“Welcoming 2023! Let the sun shine in!” the Academy Award-winning actress and producer captioned the Instagram post.
Witherspoon and Toth marked their 11th wedding anniversary in March 2022, and she commemorated their special day with a sweet tribute online.
The movie star posted a gallery of photos of the pair from throughout the years alongside a caption that read: “Happy Anniversary JT!! 11 years of adventures, love, and laughter. I feel so lucky to share this wonderful life with you.”
The two celebrated Valentine’s Day a month before as Witherspoon shared how they marked the day while wishing her spouse a happy Valentine’s Day.
She penned, “Love my Valentine” on social media while sharing a snapshot of the arrangement of red roses and chocolates, which Toth surprised her with.
“Jim Just Isn’t the Guy Reese Witherspoon Married:” the Reason for the Divorce Revealed
Witherspoon and the talent agent’s divorce news came two days before their 12th wedding anniversary. A friend and colleague of the pair, who has worked closely with them for the past ten years, revealed the move is not as surprising to those close to them.
The insider mentioned that despite Toth and the award-winning actress having amassed great success with their joint business ventures, including selling their production company Hello Sunshine for nearly $1 billion in 2021, they had developed different goals in life.
“It was never if with Reese and Jim but when,” revealed the source, adding the disconnection in their marriage began in late 2021.
It became apparent to those around them that they wanted to live without each other. However, they were still enjoying the celebrations of their massive Hello Sunshine deal that they sold to Candle Media for $900 million.
The deal made Witherspoon and Toth grow apart, and after sealing the agreement, they only focused on raising their 12-year-old son Tennessee. Despite them butting heads occasionally, their child is their priority.
In addition to the deal, the insider disclosed that Toth’s career change five years ago was the biggest factor in his marriage falling apart. He left the agency world and became an investor and an advisor in the production company.
The father of one became a different person, but that does not mean he would struggle to co-parent with the mother of his child. The source further divulged:
“Jim isn’t the guy Reese married and had a son with anymore.”
The booker’s persona, frame of mind, and perspective on life reportedly changed entirely after leaving the agency business world behind him.
The source added after the Pennsylvania native and Witherspoon made so much money from Hello Sunshine and did not know what to do with it, leading them to relook at their life together.
According to the insider, even though Toth would still be a part of Witherspoon’s life while co-parenting, he plans on seeking new opportunities with the money he made from their deal – something he has longed to do for a while.
Arrest, Birth of Child & Love: Inside Their Life of Almost 12 Years
Witherspoon and Toth started dating in January 2010, and they went public with their relationship in March of that same year. They wed in a California wedding ceremony a year later.
Another year later, in September 2012, Toth and the New Orleans native welcomed their only child together, a son named Tennessee. At the time of his arrival, a rep for the “Legally Blonde” star revealed the mother-and-son duo was in good health and that the entire family was delighted at the news.
Witherspoon and Toth have been through ups and downs, including being in trouble with the law. In April 2013, the two were arrested in Atlanta for disorderly conduct and DUI.
The “Big Little Lies” star paid a fine after pleading no contest, while Toth pleaded guilty and was sentenced to community service.
In a statement about the incident, Witherspoon admitted to being heavily drunk, adding she was ashamed of how she conducted herself during her interaction with law enforcement. The Emmy Award winner admitted to being wrong by insulting the police officer who apprehended her and Toth and profusely apologized.
Witherspoon has shown how much she loved Toth over the years by penning heartfelt posts on social media about him. On Valentine’s Day in February 2016, she posted a note he wrote for her that read: “Happy Valentine’s Day, beautiful! I love you! Jim.” In turn, she gushed, “Love my sweet husband!”
The pair posed together for a festive holiday photo for Christmas in December 2022, with the children, Ava, Deacon, and Tennesse, by the Christmas tree.
