In February 2014, Eastwood saved the life of Steve John, the CEO of the AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am golf tournament, by performing the Heimlich maneuver.
Eastwood participated in the AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am as an amateur, and he currently holds the position of chairman of the Monterey Peninsula Foundation. His participation in the event brought him massive attention.
The incident happened while John was eating hors d’oeuvres and chatting with VIPs during a party honoring the tournament’s volunteers. Suddenly, a piece of cheese lodged in his throat, making it hard for him to breathe.
Eastwood, then 83 years old, noticed John’s distress. When he looked into John’s eyes at that crucial moment, Eastwood said he saw a look of panic similar to those who experience a sudden realization about their lives.
Even though John weighed 202 pounds, Eastwood was able to lift him in the air and perform the Heimlich maneuver, successfully removing the blockage from John’s throat.
John later expressed his gratitude to Eastwood, saying, “Clint saved my life.” Eastwood, for his part, recalled the panic in John’s eyes as he struggled to breathe.
This was the first time Eastwood had ever performed the Heimlich, but unfortunately, it was not the first time John had needed it. He revealed that he had required the life-saving maneuver once before, in Colorado about seven or eight years ago.
From a young age, the cinema legend has prioritized taking care of his body. Eastwood does transcendental meditation every day and follows a low-fat, high-protein diet. He also engages in cardiovascular exercise. He added:
“I’d always done muscle-training exercise.”
Eastwood shared that he also incorporated calisthenics into his workout regimen to build muscle mass. The health-conscious actor also learned about weightlifting while serving in the military.
The renowned actor has been lifting weights since he was just 19 years old. Getting plenty of rest is also part of his fitness routine. In addition to following these healthy habits, Eastwood advised others to avoid carbohydrates, especially sugary treats.
Instead, he recommended eating raw fruits and vegetables, taking vitamins, and avoiding alcohol. He encouraged people to keep a scale in their bathroom, get enough sleep, and cultivate an optimistic outlook on life.
