Hugh Jackman and Deborra-Lee Furness announced they are separating after 27 years of marriage. The couple met in 1995 when they were on the set of Australian drama “Corelli.” Jackman proposed to Furness just four months after their first meeting.

The actor said he knew from when the duo met that they would spend the rest of their lives together. Over the 27 years Jackman and Furness were married, they created a pact and a set of rules to ensure their marriage stayed strong.

Jackman revealed in the book “Father Hood: Inspiration For The New Dad Generation” that he and Furness made a pact to look each other in the eye at every crossroads in their lives, whether big or small. When these instances occurred, they would ask each other if the crossroads were good or bad for their marriage.

For instance, when they had kids, they asked themselves if it was good or bad for their family. As often as possible, the couple would do something good for their family. On their 27th wedding anniversary, Jackman wished Furness a happy anniversary and said together they had created a beautiful family.

In addition to the pact, the actor and his ex had other rules to help their union stand the test of time. As the couple are both actors, they agreed never to spend more than two weeks apart. The pair also decided they’d never go to sleep on an argument, so even if it were three o’clock in the morning, they’d solve their issues.

Jackman and Furness also said they’d be 100 percent honest with each other. They agreed to choose honesty even if they messed things up or the truth was embarrassing. The actor also said that trust was vital in their marriage.

Another insider said the lockdown during COVID-19 put a strain on the couple.

The couple united their family for 27 years, including their two kids, Oscar Maximilian Jackman, 23, and Ava Eliot Jackman, 18. Now, Jackman and Furness announced that they have amicably ended their marriage.

Jackman and Furness shared a statement announcing their split. They said that after almost three decades of a loving and happy marriage, they had chosen to separate to focus on their individual growth.

Their statement further noted that the couple was ready to move on to their next chapter with love, gratitude, and kindness. Furness and Jackman got married on April 11, 1996. Since their romance became public, they became one of Hollywood’s most beloved couples.

The pair’s last red carpet appearance as a couple was at the Met Gala on May 1, 2023. The two were also spotted together at the men’s final at Wimbledon in July 2023. Jackman had previously said that he and Furness constantly reset their relationship. He said this when the two had been married for 25 years.

The father of two added that Furness was amazing and that the longer their marriage went, the better it got. However, a source close to the two said the pair’s separation was not a surprise as the two had grown apart and lived just like roommates. The sources added that the pair’s split happened a while ago as family and friends were aware of it.

Another insider said the lockdown during COVID-19 put a strain on the couple, whose relationship was already rocky. The source added that the writer’s strike didn’t help Furness and Jackman’s marriage as it got them in the same situation COVID-19 did.

Now, Furness and Jackman’s love for each other has become a friendship. The pair will be forever linked as they have children together. The two said their family will remain their highest priority despite the separation.
